Construction

The one-piece back board is nailed to the case sides. The lid hinges on pintels that are extensions of the back. The drawer sides are dovetailed to the drawer front with one large dovetail reinforced with a rosehead nail; the drawer bottom fits in a rabbet in the drawer front and is nailed to the underside of the sides and back; the drawer back is nailed to the ends of the sides. The drawer supports are nailed to the case sides and pierce the back board; they are visible from the back. Proper left cleat, front and proper left base molding, feet and brasses are replaced. Examined by P. E. Kane and D. A. Carr on March 8, 2002.
