Construction

The rectangular single-board top has an ogee-molded edge, as do its single-board rectangular leaves, to which it is joined by iron hinges, each leaf of which is thrice-screwed. The joint between top and leaves is quarter round. The top is held on with four longitudinal braces with chamfered edges and incurvate ends. The ends each contain a brace with rosehead nails fastened into the top and each brace contains a dowel pinning it to the hinged and stationary rails. The inner, stationary rails stop quite shy of the short rails and are joined to the outer, hinged rails with rosehead nails. The stationary rails are connected to the short, double ogee-shaped skirts with dovetail joints, reinforced with vertical rectangular glue blocks whose ends are shaped to align with the skirt profile. The stationary ends of the hinged rails have a single, double-shouldered tenon connection to their leg, set to the outside of the rail. The legs swing by means of square, five-knuckled wood hinges and are angular at the knees only, being rounded below. The tendons above the ball are deeply carved and the claws slender and delicate. Examined by P. E. Kane and M. Taradash, January 18, 2007; notes compiled by T. B. Lloyd.
