Construction

The bottom leaf is held to the rails with screws through pockets in the rails; there are two pockets on the rear rail and three on the curved front rail. The curved rail is dovetailed together at the center. The stationary rail is dovetailed to the ends of the curved rails with half keys on the top and bottom and one full dovetail between them; the dovetails are thick and long; the joints are reinforced on the interior with vertical blocks. Both rear legs swing; the knuckle joints are rectangular. The stationary and hinged rails are nailed together with rosehead nails through two spacers between the hinges. The hinged rails are tenoned into the legs with tenons in the middle of the rails. The brackets are fastened with brads to the legs and underside of the rails. Examined by P. E. Kane and W. S. Braznell, August 2007.
