Construction

The rectangular single-board square-edged top is flanked by rectangular square-edged leaves, to which it is attached by four sets of iron hinges, each leaf thrice-screwed, set inward from the legs. The top is held to the frame by means of two transverse braces- set into the stationary rails and screwed into the top- by horizontal trapezoidal glue blocks at the stationary rails, and by horizontal rectilinear glue blocks at the double-serpentine short rails. The stationary and hinged rails are attached with rosehead nails, and the stationary rails are joined by a dovetailed transverse brace. The stationary rails meet the short rails in a rabbeted dovetail joint with finely carved thick-necked pins and half-pins above and below. Three of the four interior corners have a vertical trapezoidal glue block (one replaced). The hinged rails join their legs in rabbeted mortise and tenon joints, each exhibiting two pins. The hinged ends swing by means of round wood five-knuckled hinges. The square legs are five stop-fluted on all four faces. Examined by P. E. Kane and W. S. Braznell, November 18, 2011; notes compiled by T. B. Lloyd.
