Biography

Lodowick Updike II was the son of Daniel Updike (1694–1757), a lawyer and attorney general for Rhode Island, who lived in Newport where Lodowick was born. The family had a plantation "Cucumscussoc" on the west side of the Narragansett Bay. Lodowick inherited "Smith's Castle" in 1757; in 1760 he married Abigail Gardiner and raised his children at "Cocumscussoc," in what is now Wickford, Rhode Island.
