Biography

Benjamin Hammond was born in Rehoboth, Massachusetts in 1771 to Nathaniel Hammond (1740-1777), a mariner involved in the London trade, and Elizabeth (Pabodie) Hammond (died 1811). His paternal grandparents were Elnathan Hammond (1703-1793) and Mary (Rogers) (Wingnall) Hammond (1700-1749) of Rochester, Massachusetts and Newport, Rhode Island.(1)

He had removed to Newport by March, 1792, when he married Sarah Nichols of that town.(2) Together they would have five children who survived past infancy; Benjamin Peabody (1794-1876), Samuel Nichols (1796-1848), John (baptized 1804), Abigail Southard (1806-1869), and Sarah (1808-1865).(3)

In December, 1800, Benjamin and his brother John Hammond were identified as cabinetmakers when they purchased land from Newport merchant Samuel F. Gardner.(4) The brothers again bought land from Samuel F. Gardner in March, 1801.(5)

The period of 1808-1809 was busy for the Hammond family. In January, 1808, Benjamin and John Hammond, along with their wives Sarah and Freelove, sold land to Newport yeoman and laborer Jacob Clarke.(6) In August of the same year, Benjamin purchased land from his widowed mother Elizabeth.(7) In June, 1809, Elizabeth Hammond, Benjamin Hammond, and Sarah Hammond, sold land to Benjamin Hall, Newport trader and son of George Hall.(8)

Benjamin Hammond left Newport in 1809, moving to Pharsalia, New York in rural Chenango County. His brother John had moved to the same town one year earlier. He died in New York in 1858.
