Biography

Darius Allen was born in 1768 or 1769. On December 28, 1792, he married Mary Brown (1769 or 1770-1817) in Providence. They would have at least two children, Mary Brown Allen (born December 25, 1793) and Darius Cushing Brown (born October 28, 1798).(1) Mary Brown was the daughter of Captain Jeremiah Brown (born 1746) of Providence and Mary (Cushing) Brown of Scituate, Massachusetts. Her paternal grandfather served as deputy governor of Rhode Island from 1765 to 1767.(2)

Though Allen has been identified as a cabinetmaker in the past, evidence suggests that he was more likely active exclusively as a house carpenter. As early as 1794, he was elected one of twenty one "surveyors of joists, boards, spars and timber" for the town of Providence.(3)

In 1796, Allen printed a call in Providence newspapers for,

HOUSE-CARPENTERS and MASONS, 50 of each, as Journeymen, to work in S. Carolina, to whom Cash and generous Wages will be given. He likewise wants to purchase 100 Hhds. STONELIME, POTATOES and BUTTER, to be delivered by the last of the present Month.(4).

In 1797, Allen was active as a house carpenter and lumber merchant in Providence. He advertised his need for,

Five of six smart active young Men, who have served a regular Apprenticeship to the House-Carpenter's Business-Also wanted, 3 or 4 Lads, about 14 Years of Age, as Apprentices to the above Business. Apply to Darius Allen.(5).

He died in Providence, June 16, 1804.
