Biography

Jesse Bicknell was born in Attleboro, Massachusetts in 1770 to Japhet Bicknell and Molly (Carpenter) Bicknell. His father was of Bristol County, Massachusetts, and his mother of Cumberland, Rhode Island. They would remove to Chenango County in Western New York after Jesse's birth.(1) His paternal lineage is somewhat unclear, his father being either the Japhet Bicknell born in 1741 to Japhet Bicknell and Rachal Perren in Rehoboth, Massachusetts (2) or the Japhet Bicknell born in Attleboro, Massachusetts in 1750 to Japhet Bicknell and Martha (Metcalf) Bicknell.(3)

In 1793, shortly after he would have completed his term of apprenticeship, he married Elizabeth Austin (born 1776), daughter of Picus Austin and Grizzell (Tourjee) Austin of North Kingstown, Rhode Island. They would have ten children; Mary (born 1794), William (born 1796), Japhet (born 1797), Benjamin (born 1799), Jesse (born 1802), Hosea (born 1804), John (born 1806), Elizabeth (born 1809), Varnum (born 1812), and Alfred (born 1815).(4)

In 1799, Jesse was identified as a cabinet and chaise maker in Exeter, Rhode Island when he purchased seven acres of land there from the widow Mary Hammond.(5) In 1801, he was identified as a carpenter when he sold one quarter acre of land in Exeter to blacksmith Japheth Bicknell.(6) According to family lore, Jesse was a wheelwright trained as a wheelwright by Peter Burlingame, then owner grist mills established by Benjamin Hammond in the seventeenth century.(7)

Nothing more is known concerning Jesse Bicknell.
