Biography

John Hammond was born in Rehoboth, Massachusetts in 1773 to Nathaniel Hammond (1740-1777), a mariner involved in the London trade, and Elizabeth (Pabodie) Hammond (died 1811). His paternal grandparents were Elnathan Hammond (1703-1793) and Mary (Rogers) (Wingnall) Hammond (1700-1749) of Rochester, Massachusetts and Newport, Rhode Island.(1)

His wife was Freelove Gardner Albro of Newport (1774-1850). They had five children; Nathaniel (1799-1864), Penelope Remington (1801-1855), Abigail Lyon (1803-1858), Stephen Yates (born 1809), and Ruth Waldron (born 1811).(2)

In December, 1800, John and his brother Benjamin Hammond were identified as cabinetmakers when they purchased land from Newport merchant Samuel F. Gardner.(3) The brothers again bought land from Samuel F. Gardner in March, 1801.(4)

The period of 1808-1809 was busy for the Hammond family. In January, 1808, John and Benjamin Hammond, along with their wives Freelove and Sarah, sold land to Newport yeoman and laborer Jacob Clarke.(5) John left Newport in 1808, moving to Pharsalia, New York in rural Chenango County. His brother Benjamin would follow the next year.

John died in New Hudson, New York in 1867.(6)
