ConstructionThe bottom leaf is fastened to the frame with screws in pockets in the rails (two at the rear, one on each side, and three at the front). The leaves have two leaf-edge tenons to stabilize the top when open; the underside of the lower leaf has vertical sawmill marks. Vertical blocks with a chamfered corner, some of them two piece, reinforce the joints in each corner. The front rail has a single horizontal lamination. The stationary rail and the hinged rail are fastened together with eight cut nails to the left of the hinge with square teeth. The fixed part of the hinged rail stops short of the leg; the gap is filled with a block. Examined by P. E. Kane, September 30, 2006. |
