ConstructionThis desk was probably originally painted red. The top of the desk is dovetailed to the sides with half keys at the front and rear and five full dovetails between them. The backboard is chamfered and let into grooves in the sides and top. Each joint of the legs with the frame has two pins; the tenons for those joints are double-shouldered. Half-blind dovetails fasten the fronts of the interior drawers to the sides with half keys at the top and bottom; the grain of the wood on the bottom runs from side to side and the bottoms are glued to rabbets in all four sides. On the exterior drawer half blind dovetails fasten the drawer fronts to the drawer sides with half keys at the top and bottom; the dovetails at the back corners of the drawers are reversed. The kerf marks are long and coarse. The brasses appear to be original. Examined by P. E. Kane and M. Taradash, January 16, 2007. |
