ConstructionThe single-board rectangular top has a square edge, as do its single-board rectangular leaves, to which it is joined by four sets of iron hinges, each leaf of which is thrice-screwed. The joint between the top and leaves is quarter round. The top is secured to the frame by six visible wood pegs. There are no glue blocks or braces within the frame. The stationary rails, shorter than the hinged rails, are joined to them with cut nails. The stationary rails join the flat, square-edged skirts with dovetails, which are not rabbeted. The stationary ends of the stationary rails are attached to their legs with mortise and tenon joints, showing two pins apiece, as are the hinged legs. The hinged rails are each fitted with a square, five-knuckled wood hinge. The square legs are stop-fluted on the outside faces only. The central two stop-flutes are slightly taller than the flanking two. Examined by P. E. Kane, August 7, 2007; notes compiled by T. B. Lloyd. |
