ConstructionThe two butt-jointed boards of the elliptical top have eased outer edges and are held together with two butterfly joints set into its underside outside the frame?s short rails. The top is fixed to the frame by later screws in two transverse battens, which pass through the tops of the long rails of the frame below, have chamfered ends, and multiple (empty) nail holes. The flat-arch-skirted rails are double-through-wood pinned to the rectangular tops of the turned, tapering legs, which end in outset shod, pad feet with slightly flared ?shoes.? Shadows under the top within the frame indicate the former presence of large rectangular glue blocks. Examined by P.E. Kane and D.A. Carr, March, 2002; notes compiled by T.B. Lloyd. |
