The circular, tilting top has a molded edge and two shaped, stepped cleats underneath, attached thereto with five screws apiece, three in the central raised portion near the pedestal block, and one at each end. The underside of the top bears eight small holes recalling its former attachment to a lathe. Between the cleats is a block, whose underside is chamfered on three sides, held in place when the top is down by means of a circular brass latch mechanism attached to the top with three screws. The pintels that join the top to the pedestal within the block and cleats are not visible. The top of the block exhibits an iron strap, and the slightly oval, wedged top of the pedestal is visible through the block. The columnar portion of the pedestal has a turned capital and a fluted, tapered shaft above a turned base. Its plinth is plain, shaved and dovetailed to receive the three cabriole legs. Covering the joints between legs and pedestal are three iron reinforcing straps affixed with six nails and one screw. The legs terminate in slightly bulbous raised pad feet. The top is hinged to facilitate the table?s placement against a wall. Examined by P. E. Kane and W. S. Braznell, January 14, 2012; notes compiled by T. B. Lloyd.
