ConstructionThe oblong top is line-inlaid near its quarter round, molded edge, bowed at either end, and flanked by similarly inlaid and molded half-round leaves. Within the frame below is a screw pocket securing the top to one of the short rails, and supports for the bow-fronted drawers, whose bottom is chamfered on three sides and nailed to its drawer back. The leaves are supported by trapezoidal carved, wood hinges, whose bottoms are chamfered to provide finger holds. Large, vertical, quarter round glue blocks occupy the corners of the short rail opposite the drawer. The end portion of each outer rail, which is visible when the leaves are down, is a small block of solid mahogany. The tops of the square, tapering legs are shell-inlaid, the shafts line and flower-inlaid on their outer faces, and the cuffs inlaid on all four sides. Notes compiled by T.B. Lloyd, from images supplied by CRN Auctions |
