Doris Duke, born November 22, 1912, was the daughter of James Buchanan Duke (1856-1925) and Nanaline Holt Inman Duke (1871-1960). She inherited her fortune after the death of her father, founder of the American Tobacco Company and namesake of Duke University.

In 1968, Duke founded the Newport Restoration Foundation to preserve eighteenth- and nineteenth-century architecture in Newport.

She died in 1993.(1)
