Frederick Barbour jointed his family's thread manufacturing business after graduation from Princeton in 1916. He eventually succeeded his brother as president of the company and retired in 1947. He married Margaret Roberts in 1950 and moved into a salt-box house in Norfolk, Connecticut. Together they collected furniture made in Connecticut before 1774 much of which they gave to the Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford.
